August Is 10 Days Away: Your Commercial Cleaning Action Plan for Maine Businesses
August is the last big push of Maine’s summer season — and for most commercial businesses, it lands harder than July. Tourism peaks. Back-to-school shopping ramps up. Restaurants and retail hit their busiest weeks before the fall slowdown. If your facility isn’t in top shape heading into August, you’ll feel it in ways that are hard to fix mid-season.
The good news: you still have time. The final ten days of July are your window to get ahead of August before it arrives.
This isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about hitting the five areas that matter most — the ones that will show up in customer impressions, employee productivity, and your ability to stay on top of things during your busiest stretch of the year.
1. Book Your August Cleaning Schedule Now — Before Spots Fill
If you use a professional commercial cleaning service in Maine, late July is the moment to confirm your August schedule — not August 1st.
This matters more than it sounds. Cleaning companies across the Bangor and Central Maine area see a surge in service requests every August. Businesses that wait until August to book or adjust their service often face limited availability, rushed scheduling, or the realization that they’ve been operating on a service frequency that doesn’t match their actual summer traffic levels.
Call your cleaning service this week and ask two questions:
- Is my current service frequency adequate for August? If your foot traffic in July has been meaningfully higher than spring, the answer is probably no. A weekly cleaning that worked fine in March may not be keeping pace with daily summer use.
- Can I get a deep clean scheduled before August 5th? Booking the first week of August as a reset point gives you a clean baseline to maintain through the rest of the month.
If you don’t have a commercial cleaning service yet, now is genuinely the right time. Get a quote from Clean Scene — we’re taking August bookings now and we’ll do a walkthrough before we start.
2. Walk Your Facility Like a Customer Would
Set aside 20 minutes before your business opens one morning this week. Walk in through the front entrance, move through every customer-facing space, and use the restrooms. Not as the owner. As a first-time visitor who doesn’t know you.
Ask yourself:
- Does the entry smell fresh or stale?
- Are the floors clean all the way to the edges, or is there a buildup ring along the baseboards?
- Are fingerprints visible on glass doors and display cases?
- Does the restroom feel clean to the touch — not just deodorized?
- Are there surfaces that feel sticky or gritty when you run your hand across them?
- Is there visible dust on ledges, vents, or signage above eye level?
This exercise surfaces problems that get invisible when you’re in your space every day. Business owners stop “seeing” their own environments after a while — which is exactly how a facility can slip into a condition that customers notice immediately.
Make a short list of what you find. That list is your pre-August punch list.
3. Address Floor Condition Before August Foot Traffic Compounds It
Maine summer floors take a beating. Sand, grit, outdoor debris, moisture from humid air, and the constant traffic of summer footwear — especially in coastal and tourist-adjacent areas — accumulate in ways that routine mopping and vacuuming can’t fully reverse.
If your floors looked dull or worn-in when you walked through them in Step 2, late July is the right time to address it — not mid-August when you’re at capacity.
For hard floors (tile, LVT, commercial vinyl), a proper deep scrub and reseal or recoat restores the surface to a condition your daily maintenance can then sustain. For carpeted areas, a hot-water extraction removes the embedded grit and organic material that makes commercial carpet start to look permanently stained.
Neither of these can be done during peak business hours, which is another reason to book now. Contact us about scheduling floor restoration for evenings or weekends when it won’t disrupt your operation.
4. Don’t Let Restrooms Drift Into August
Restrooms are the highest-stakes area in any commercial facility. A customer who walks into a dirty restroom doesn’t just note it — they revise their opinion of your entire business. Research from Bradley Corporation consistently finds that restroom cleanliness is one of the top factors customers use to judge a business’s professionalism and attention to detail.
In summer, restroom traffic increases with tourist and seasonal foot traffic. If your restrooms are on a routine cleaning schedule — meaning they’re wiped down, restocked, and deodorized — but haven’t had a real deep clean since spring, July is the month to address it.
A true restroom deep clean covers:
- Grout lines between floor and wall tiles (where bacteria and mold accumulate)
- Underside of fixtures — toilet rims, faucet bases, soap dispenser undercarriages
- Drain cleaning to eliminate slow drains and odor sources
- Wall tiles and partitions scrubbed, not just wiped
- Air vent covers cleaned to remove dust and reduce odor recirculation
This is the difference between a restroom that passes a quick inspection and one that actually feels clean when a customer walks in. It matters.
5. Set Up a High-Touch Surface Protocol for August
High-touch surfaces — door handles, light switches, reception counters, POS terminals, conference room remotes, break room appliance handles — are touched hundreds of times a day and are frequently missed in routine cleaning.
By late July, most commercial spaces have several months of skin oils, residue, and grime built up on high-touch surfaces that look clean but aren’t. And going into August, when traffic is highest, is exactly the wrong time to leave these areas unaddressed.
If your cleaning contract doesn’t explicitly include high-touch surface sanitization on every service visit, ask your provider to add it — or add it to your own daily checklist. The protocol doesn’t need to be complicated: a disinfectant-rated wipe or microfiber cloth with an EPA-registered surface disinfectant, applied to every high-touch point, at the start and end of each day.
The EPA’s Safer Choice program maintains a list of certified disinfectants that are effective against common pathogens without leaving harsh chemical residue on frequently touched surfaces. It’s a solid reference if you’re evaluating products.
The 10-Day Window
Here’s the reality: there’s a narrow window between “late enough to see what July did to your facility” and “too late to fix it before August hits.”
That window is right now.
A commercial cleaning service that can turn around a deep clean in the next week or two will have your facility in peak condition before August’s traffic arrives. A facility that enters August already worn-down will absorb another month of heavy use and come out the other side needing significantly more work.
The businesses in Bangor, Brewer, Orono, and across Central Maine that show up well in August don’t wait for a problem to become obvious. They use late July to reset — and it shows.
